Leica has just released firmware update 3.1.1 for the Leica Q3, bringing several exciting improvements that enhance both usability and performance. If you’re a Q3 user, this update is definitely worth your attention.
Improved Autofocus Control
One of the biggest additions is a brand-new AF Settings menu. This gives photographers greater control over autofocus sensitivity and speed, allowing you to tailor how the camera reacts in different shooting situations. Whether you’re capturing fast-moving subjects or working in calm, still environments, this update makes autofocus feel more responsive and customizable.
In addition, the “AF Tracking Start Position” has been moved into the new AF menu, making it easier to access and adjust.
Better Performance and Compliance
Leica has also ensured that the Q3 is now fully compliant with EU energy efficiency regulations (EU 2023/826, Lot 6 and Lot 26), showing their commitment to sustainability.
There’s also a new shooting option: Continuous shooting at 5 fps with 12-bit color depth and active autofocus. This is especially useful for street, action, or candid photography, where timing and speed make all the difference.
Faster Focus Point Control
Another small but welcome change is that the “Toggle Focus Point” function can now be assigned to the FN button, giving you quick access to change your focus point without diving into the menus.
Before You Update
Leica recommends backing up your user profile before installing the update to save your custom settings. You can install the update via the Leica FOTOS app or by placing the update file in the root directory of your SD card.
During installation, the screen might go black for a few minutes—don’t worry, this is normal. Just be patient and don’t turn off the camera or remove the battery.
⸻
This update may seem technical, but the changes it brings make the Leica Q3 an even more powerful tool for serious photographers. With better autofocus control, improved speed, and thoughtful tweaks to usability, it shows that Leica continues to refine and support its cameras long after release.
